The untimely death of Chadwick Boseman has filled social media with tributes, the most touching of which are children mourning the loss of the Black Panther star. At the time of its release in 2018, the Black Panther film was not only a blockbuster taking over $1.3 billion US dollars (£973 million) during its cinema release.
Hailed as the fifth highest-grossing movie ever in the U.S. (not adjusted for inflation) the film shifted the business case that films with a predominantly black cast, and black director could be a commercial success. The power of Black Panther shifted the conversations, challenging assumption, and commercial opportunities.
The release of Black Panther came at a time when racial tensions were fraught. The story line challenged many issues including institutional bias, challenging oppressors and protecting and valuing the sanctity of traditions associated with Africa.
