As a woman in jazz, Terri Lyne Carrington has spent her long, storied career notching milestones and breaking boundaries. Now, the much-decorated drummer says she’s out to challenge an entire system.

Carrington, the Boston-born sensation who is now artistic director for Detroit’s Carr Center, has racked up plenty of “first woman” accolades in her decades on the scene. She says she remains proud of those achievements — but about five years ago realized that “recognition without responsibility is not good.”

“Being the exception means there’s a rule,” Carrington says.
