Henrietta Mays Smith, the first Black professor in the University of South Florida’s School of Information, touched hearts with her charming stories and compassionate nature until she was well into her 90s.
A librarian and storyteller as well as a scholar and writer, Smith’s notable publications include four editions of the American Library Association’s books of winners of its Coretta Scott King Award, which is given either to a Black author or illustrator of children’s and young adult literature whose work demonstrates an appreciation for African-American culture.
