Missy Wilson will celebrate her 35th birthday in a spot so remote it will take her a flight to Alaska and a trip in a bushplane before she can even begin an eight-day trek.

“I’m so excited. I can’t wait,” said Wilson, who lives in Spring.

She has been busy preparing — taking hikes, focusing on strength training and shopping for necessities. Her next step is practicing walking while wearing a weighted pack. Over time, she will build up the load to what her adventure will require.

A series of serendipitous events led to this moment — one that includes finding the organizing group Black Women Who Kayak + and a surprise Grape-Nuts sponsorship.

But it all really started in her childhood home of Atlanta, when she discovered her love of the outdoors. Wilson credits her aunt Kathy Hall, a leader for the nonprofit Outward Bound, for serving as her inspiration when Hall took her on her first hike at the age of 5.
