Maryland could make history in November.

After a protracted bit of vote counting, author Wes Moore is projected to win the Democratic nomination for governor while fellow Democrat Anthony Brown has secured his nomination in the Attorney General’s race.

The two men are overwhelming favorites in the General Election, where they could be the first Black candidates in Maryland to win statewide.

For Kaye Whitehead, an African and African-American Studies professor at the Loyola University of Maryland, it could be even more than a Maryland milestone.

“What is really exciting about the possibility of Wes Moore becoming the next governor of the state of Maryland is because you’ve only had a small handful of black men to ever hold that position,” Whitehead said.

Despite Black people making up about 30% of the electorate, Maryland has never had a Black governor, senator, attorney general or comptroller.
