State lawmakers launched a bipartisan caucus that aims to advocate for the students, alumni and communities of Virginia’s historically Black colleges and universities.

The caucus is co-chaired by state Sen. Mamie Locke, a Democrat whose district includes all of Hampton and parts of Newport News, and Del. Alex Askew, a Democrat whose district includes parts of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

It will represent the interests of Virginia’s five HBCUs in the state legislature, focused on securing more funding for academic programing and for the improvement of infrastructure and technology as well as expanding financial aid and affordability options.
