For all of its good qualities, Houston is not considered a film town. Filmmakers here struggle to find community and collaborators, get funding or studio space, and make the relationships that help bring a project to the big screen. For the city’s Black filmmakers, that’s where Black Cinema Club HTX comes in.
You may know BCCHTX from their film screenings and events or their social media videos featuring founder Jerry Madison Jr. and his partners Leroy Cook, Shameika Smith and Arnaud Ndihokubwayo. But one of their main missions currently is to help Houston’s Black filmmakers establish themselves both in the city and in the broader film world. The HTX in the name is non-negotiable.
