The Education Department on Tuesday released $36 billion in federal aid from the latest coronavirus relief package to more than 5,000 colleges and universities with the aim of bolstering schools that serve students and families hardest hit by the pandemic.

In doing so, the Biden administration sent a record-breaking windfall of federal support to community colleges, historically black colleges and universities and minority-serving institutions.

“These funds are critical to ensuring that all of our nation’s students – particularly those disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic – have the opportunity to enroll, continue their education, graduate and pursue their careers,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said on a press call Monday evening.
