Demographers estimate that by 2045, the collective BIPOC ethnic group will overtake white Americans as the minority majority—a new majority with rising political and economic influence. By mid-century, Black power will extend beyond a revolutionary ideal to become a potent reality. Approaching this tipping point, however, it seems we stand timidly at the foot of a daunting bridge. Will our excitement to traverse it eclipse our fear of stumbling across? How does American design resolutely embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion as its transformative point of difference?
