When Cardinal Ritter College Prep opened in 1979, leaders in the Archdiocese of St. Louis established its prevailing goal: to provide what Black children need.
Ever since, Black teachers and administrators have been one of the main factors in the Catholic school’s academic and athletic success.
“Students need role models who look like them in the classroom,” said Cardinal Ritter president Tamiko Armstead, a graduate of the school.
Armstead recently posted a photo of the 18 Black male teachers and administrators — 40% of the staff — standing shoulder-to-shoulder in front of the school.
The photo went viral along with Armstead’s caption, which pushed back on the idea that Black male teachers are hard to find. Nationwide, fewer than 2% of teachers are Black men.
