Kevin Barnette’s path to becoming the first Black elected official in the 170-year history of Madison County follows a trail blazed by his grandmother.

First appointed to the Madison County Board of Education in 2018 before running unopposed for the same seat in 2020, Barnette inherited a family legacy from Viola King Barnette that taught him both the value of education and the impact of one voice.
